Greetings!

Greetings, Readers and Viewers (and Listeners) Advisory Interest Group Members! (whew)
You are part of the interest group that has both the largest group & the longest name!
We're number 1!!!

Speaking for Susan C & myself, we are glad that you are part of this group and look forward to your participation both in the quarterly meetings and on this blog.

I'm hoping you are here because you received my email and are ready to do a little practice commenting. There is no requirement for you to comment but we'd like to hear from you and make sure that you feel comfortable commenting. Feel free to write as much as you like, and comment more than once if you want the practice.

We'll kick this off with something simple to let you get the hang of commenting (if you need the practice).

Today's topic:
So, you are a member of the Readers, Viewers and Listeners Advisory Interest Group - what do you like to read, view and/or listen to?

There are far too many of my favorites to mention, but one of my favorite books is The Penny by Joyce Meyer and Deborah Bradford. It is a great book about faith and love, humanity and human frailty. This is one you won't be able to put down and will want to re-read. My favorite movie is by far Money Pit with Tom Hanks. It represents true life (how it can really turn to crap but as long as you love each other, things turn out ok.

Thanks for the post, Andrew. In addition to books, I absolutely LOVE audiobooks - usually have two going at one time. A favorite reader is Scott Brick. I'm currently listening to "Killing Rommel" by Pressfield. It's a fascinating look at the North African campaign during WWII. The reader is Alfred Molina who does a fair job.

At the last session of the Book club we discussed the book by J.S. Foer "Everything is Illuminated". As it is a Russian Book club we discussed it in Russian. Must admit not many people liked it or understood. So I tried to show why this book had become an immediate bestseller and the author was acknowleged a prodigy (he was only 25 when the book was published). It's a difficult book, has two narrators and powerfully used such stylistic device as a Stream of consciousness. I also read some passages in English just to show that the book should be read in the original to appreciate the style and the contents. Must admit it was a hot discussion!

My favorite book of all time is "Wind in the Willows" because it is such a good example of friendships, tried and true and tested. I love audiobooks. I like them pretty light usually as I listen to them in my car. My favorite is Agatha Raisin. She is a flawed human being who is trying to improve. The reader, Donada Peters is fantastic.

Andrew,
Thanks so much for getting this off the ground and making it so enjoyable so far. I love to read, but rarely listen to audio books because it's too hard to give up listening to music. My favorite book this past year was The Book Thief by Markus Zusak.

I read an interesting non-fiction book this summer: The Cactus Eaters: How I lost my mind (and almost my life) on the Pacific Crest Trail. The author, Dan White, chronicles his through- hike of the PCT which took him two summers to complete because he and his girlfriend got such a late start. They were so unprepared it was hilarious, and it was hard to believe that a guy who grew up in So. Calif. had never heard of the PCT while growing up and didn't know you couldn't eat cactus without removing the spines! I am intrigued by these hikers who actually thrive on the hardships of such an endeavor. Another book written about the same subject is A Blistered Kind of Love: One couples trial by trail by Angela & Duffy Ballard. (ALD doesn't own this one).

I just tried to correct my prior entry but I guess that doesn't work!! The correct title of the book is: The Cactus Eaters: how I lost my mind- and almost found myself- on the Pacific Crest Trail.
Sorry!!

Let's see... I'm a girl, 30-something years old and unmarried - so what do I read? Relationship books - how to find someone, date, get along, blah, blah, blah.

And I enjoy listening to books on tape in my car, and since I only have a tape player (not a cd player) I'm a little upset that ALD will be getting rid of all our books on tape soon!

I very seldom listen to audio books unless I am on a road trip. I mostly listen to music at home. I have a lot of favorite authors but James Patterson, Jody Picoult, and Lisa Jackson are just a few. I
handle all the new DVD's that come in but do not watch a lot, guess I should so I could tell the patrons about them if they ask.abyjps

Sorry for joining in so late! I listen to audio books--love them! Always have one going in the car. Like to read espionage, war stories (fiction and nonfiction), survival, detective stories, nonfiction etc. Recently read Skeletons at the Feast. Great fiction book --world war II from the German ordinary citizen perspective. Well, written and so interesting.
Am looking forward to the meeting tomorrow.

Thanks to all for sharing. I'm so glad Cheryl S. brought up "Skeletons at the Feast" as I just finished reading it and thought it was fantastic. A page-turner and what a commentary on the horrors of war- especially how the civilian population was affected, not to mention the slave labor the Nazis forced on innocents.

I like to read just about anything, both fiction and non fiction. Movie favorites are action films (not usually chick flicks), but when I check out a movis it is often a doucmentary or a froeign film. Music favorites are even more diverse than reading, anything from modern country to rock, classical and bagpipes. Do you know the difference between an onion and a bagpipe? No one cries when you cut up a bagpipe.

Like others, too many good books out there to name just one, but my faves are probably mysteries and suspense/thrillers. Because of a more lengthy commute than others, I get to happily listen to audiobooks on the way to and from work! Narrators can offer a new dimension with their audio interpretations. Favorite readers include Davina Porter, Barbara Rosenblat, Kate Reading, & Scott Brick. Women do better men's voices than men do women's, I have discovered!

The Notebook, by Nicholas Sparks
"Romance and undying love. Superb!"
